Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced the launch of the Punjab Chief Minister Free Solar Panel Scheme, aimed at reducing electricity costs for households.
Speaking at the official inauguration on Friday, she stressed that the initiative will provide long-term relief to 100,000 low-power consumers across the province.
Consumers can apply for the scheme starting today through the online portal at cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk or send their details via SMS to 8800.
The process involves verification through reference on the applicant’s electricity bill and CNIC number, followed by a computerized ballot system to ensure transparency.
Details of the division of the solar system
The provincial energy secretary briefed the chief minister about the details of the scheme.
A 550-watt solar system will be provided to 52,019 households consuming up to 100 units per month.
A 1,100-watt solar system will be allocated to those consuming up to 200 units per month.
The entire scheme will be implemented over a period of one year.
Additional steps and benefits
Solar panels and inverters will be linked to the user’s CNIC to prevent theft. The installation of 100,000 solar systems is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 57,000 tonnes and reduce the subsidy burden on the federal government.
Public resources for public relief
The Chief Minister highlighted that 7.3 million consumers in Punjab have already benefited from a subsidy of Rs 14 per unit and the solar scheme is another step towards ensuring that public funds are used for the welfare of citizens.
A helpline will be launched soon to assist consumers in accessing the scheme.
